What is online roulette?

Casino roulette is a game consisting primarily of a roulette wheel and a small ball. The wheel consists of numbered sections, or pockets, running from 1 to 36 and colored red and black, and a 0 pocket colored green.  American roulette adds a 00 pocket, also green. The dealer (real or virtual) makes the wheel spin and then drops a small ball onto the wheel. The ball rolls around the wheel in the opposite direction of the spin until eventually the wheel slows down and the ball drops down into one of the pockets. The point of the game is to bet and predict what pocket the ball will land in.

To bet on roulette online, players use a betting grid with 12 horizontal and 3 vertical columns.  Simply place your bet by clicking on the grid position you’d like cover with your virtual chip. You can make an inside bet or an outside bet (read further for more details). After that, the wheel spins, the ball drops, and you find out whether the number you picked on the grid corresponds with the winning number.

Play online roulette your way

The rules of online roulette are easy enough for anyone to learn, while at the same time, there’s enough variety in the betting to keep the most experienced players interested. The simplest way to play is just to pick one number and hope it pays out, but you can also bet on a selection of numbers for better odds – and better chances to win! The rule of thumb is that the more numbers you bet on, the more the odds favour you to potentially win. At the same time, the more numbers you bet on at once, the more the size of your potential pay-out is reduced. It’s up to you to decide what style of betting you prefer.

Online roulette – the different ways to bet

Casino roulette bets generally consist of inside bets and outside bets, explained as follows:

Inside bets – how to place them

Inside bets are the bets that you can make by laying your chips down on the betting grid itself. Depending on where exactly you place your bet, you can make four types of inside bet:

  • The straight-up bet is where you place your chips on a single number for a potential 35:1 payout if your number comes up.
  • A split bet is when you bet on two numbers at the same time. You make the bet by placing your chip between two numbers on the betting grid. Here you stand to potentially win at 17:1.
  • To make a corner bet, also termed a square bet or quad bet, place your token at the corner where four numbers meet to bet on them all for a potential 8:1 payout
  • A street bet is where you bet on three numbers in one of the rows, or “streets”, on the betting grid. Place your chips at the end of a street and if one of them wins, the pay-out is at 11:1.

How to make outside bets

Around the edges of the betting grid is where you place your outside bets, as the name implies. The odds of winning an outside bet tend to be higher while the payouts tend to be proportionately lower, as the following examples indicate:

  • An even money bet is when you basically spread your bet across half the numbers – all reds, all blacks, odds, evens, high (1-18) or low (19-36) – and get your stake back as well as winnings of the same value if you win. The payout is 1:1, in other words. You can’t place an even money bet on the 0 or 00.
  • A column bet is when you place chips on all the numbers in one betting grid column for a potential 2:1 payout.
  • A dozen bet is when you cover the first, second or third set of 12 numbers for a potential 2:1 payout.

For added fun and interest, you can combine inside and outside bets. Many games have a feature that allows you to save your favorite betting combinations.

Additionally, some games let you make neighbours bets and call bets. A neighbours bet is when pick a number on the wheel, rather than on the betting grid, and bet on that number as well as its neighbors – two to the left and two to the right, for a total of 5 numbers. To make a call bet, you just “call” your bet instead of placing chips. Most online roulette games will require you to play in expert mode to make a call bet, as it takes experience to get them right.

Roulette variations at All Slots Casino

At All Slots, we have a range of online roulette games that will allow you to explore a wide variety of different betting styles so that you can find the style that suits you best.

Our French Roulette not only lets you make call bets and neighbour bets  but also gives you the benefit of the rule of La Partage, which reduces your even-money bet losses by half should the ball drop on 0.

American Roulette tables have a 00 pocket alongside the 0, enabling additional betting possibilities such as row bets, where you can win at 17:1 by successfully betting on 0 or 00, and basket bets, which involves betting on 00, 0, 1, 2 and 3 with one chip.
